About Bella Rosa

The story of Bella Rosa House begins back in the 1800s when Johannes Tesselar of the Dutch East India Trading Company was granted the farm 811 in the Overberg Area. When he, and his wife died, the farm was passed to nine former slaves and their families in 1832. The community, known as Tesselaarsdal, developed out of these nine families. Interestingly, during the apartheid era in South Africa, the Group Areas Act never applied to Tesselaarsdal and thus there were no forced removals of the descendants from their land. It has thus been named as the one of the only communities in South Africa that apartheid never applied to.

Our story begins in 2021 when we acquired the beautiful farmhouse of Bella Rosa in this quaint village. We were particularly interested in the original building, which dates back to the 1800s, and was said to be one of the homes of the original slave families. The rest of the house was built around this important building in 2006.

Nestled in the heart of the countryside, this Tuscan-style farmhouse offers the perfect retreat for large families and groups of friends seeking quality time together. Whether gathered around the dining table, lounging by the pool, or soaking in the hot tub beneath the stars, this is a place to reconnect and unwind.

Surrounded by nature, the farmhouse invites you to slow down, curl up with a good book, embark on a mountain biking adventure, or explore the land in search of wild mushrooms.
